I did a fresh install of beta2 5384. At first IE was working with protected mode on as the default. Now whenever I start IE it locks up on startup and I need task mgr to kill it. If I use cntl-panel/internet-settings/turn off protected mode, I can surf after I click the home icon. I am logged in as an administer. All windowsupdate patches are installed. I have a couple of other installs and I have not had this issue with them, but this is the install I've banged on the most. Any ideas?

IE7 crash only with protected mode on
Thanks for that - I was having the same problem - hope we get a better fix soon.....

Any sign of a fix for this? I am having exactly the same problem, same scenario etc. I'm glad I read this thread or I would have been stuck without Web access.

Just to bump this issue.
I'm also finding that IE7 is freezing when protected mode is on. In my case it stopped working after an install of VS C#.
IE7 just freezes when it starts, it does not even show the my default URL (google) in the address bar. It can only be closed after frantic clicking on the "X", or ending the task in task manager.
If I turn protected mode off, then all works well.

Check to see if you have Java 5 installed. Some posters have reported that you don't have to install Java to have it installed on your machine. Other software will install it for you.
If you find it, uninstall it, and then try IE7 again. If IE7 starts working, try installing Java Beta 6 which can be downloaded from the Java Sun web site.
I have found that IE7 will not work with Java 5, but will work with Java Beta 6.

Java 5 DOES work in Vista, bot x86 and x64! Use the "Online Installation" instead of downloading the offline file.
I have it loaded on both my Vista x86 and x64. They BOTH work!
Good for you, but if Java 5 is installed by downloading it can and does screw up IE7 and uninstalling it will cause IE7 to work.
And Java 6 Beta does not cause the problem.

Thanks for the Java insight. I uninstalled java and protected mode worked right away. I did an online install of Jave beta6 and now I have IE protected mode and a JVM working. Microsoft and Sun should mention this issue in the release notes. I tried to install AIM and Vista knew it was incompatable. Vista should know about this too.
